Portugal entered the World Travel Awards ceremony in Muscat, with the title of double world champion and, not only once again received Oscar of best destination to visit, but brought home 11 more awards. The World Travel Awards distinguish best practices from the tourism industry in accommodation, transportation, destination, or attraction. There are over 300 categories under review. Portugal received the title of ‘Best Destination in the World’ for the third time. Regarding this presentation, the Secretary of State for Tourism stressed that “we must all continue to work to reinforce Portugal’s international affirmation.” Rita Marques assumed that the distinction “is an honor” and that attests to “the excellence of Portugal and the Portuguese and, at the same time, raises the demand” that is demanded from the entire sector. This year were also nominated for this category destinations such as Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dubai, Greece, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka , USA and Vietnam. The victories didn’t stop there. Lisbon, which last year had been recognized as the best city in the world to visit, this year won the title of ‘Best City Break Destination in the World’, an award that Paula Oliveira, Executive Director of the Lisbon Tourism Association (ATL) associates it with “work on heritage requalification, destination promotion and improvement of cultural, gastronomic and tourist offerings” which “has positioned the destination as a reference for good practice”
